Phantasm Consort
The Phantasm Consort is the very best viol ensemble in the world today. Under the direction of Laurence Dreyfus, the Gramophone-award winning consort has performed everywhere from Tokyo to Istanbul and their many recordings have been lauded as eloquent, sensitive, sensuous and beguiling.
Laurence Dreyfus, treble viol and director of Phantasm, was born into a family of musicians, and was taught to read music before he could read English. His talents led him to the prestigious Juilliard School in New York where he studied cello with the legendary American cellist Leonard Rose. Whilst studying for a PhD in musicology at Columbia University under leading Bach scholar, Christoph Wolff, Laurence started teaching himself the viola da gamba, ultimately landing in the class of Wieland Kuijken at the Royal Conservatoire in Brussels. A dual career as musicologist and performer took him all over the world to research music history, perform concerts, give lectures and performances classes. The move to England in the early 1990s sparked a burning desire to form a world-class consort of viols. It has taken many years to find the right players who shared Laurence’s enthusiasm for English consort music.
Jonathan Manson is one of Europe’s leading performers on both cello and viola da gamba. Born in Edinburgh to a musical family, he received his formative training at the International Cello Centre under the direction of Jane Cowan, later going on to study with Steven Doane and Christel Thielmann at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. A growing fascination for early music led him to Holland, where he studied viola da gamba with Wieland Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Jonathan frequently appears as a principal and continuo player with the Dunedin Consort, Arcangelo, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and other leading early music groups. Since 2003, Jonathan has been professor for baroque cello and viola da gamba at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and is a regular guest at the Guildhall School of Music, the Royal College of Music, Trinity Laban Conservatoire, Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Welsh College. He has also been invited to teach on numerous courses around the world.
