‘With Comrades Brave and True’: Celebrating songs that Kate Sheppard sang
Kate Sheppard was not just a suffragist: she was also a fine musician who loved singing (sometimes as the soloist) with the choirs in her neighbourhood of Riccarton during the 1880s and 1890s. Our concert is selected from the programmes of concerts that Kate sang in, along with a few other songs by composers of the period. Victorian part-songs, and glees are not often heard these days, but we hope you enjoy listening to these 19th century gems as much as we enjoyed learning them.
The Schola Cantorum choir sings early European music, mostly unaccompanied.
