The New Zealand Saxophone Society is thrilled to announce that Nobuya Sugawa, one of the world’s most revered saxophonists, will be performing in New Zealand for the first time. Sugawa’s extraordinary career has established him as a prominent figure in the world of saxophone music. A graduate of the Tokyo University of the Arts, Sugawa has won multiple prestigious awards and has released over 30 albums, many of which have garnered critical acclaim. He has performed as a soloist with renowned orchestras and ensembles, including the BBC Philharmonic, Eastman Wind Ensemble, NHK Symphony Orchestra, and Slovak Radio Orchestra.
In addition to his work as a soloist, Sugawa spent more than 20 years as the concertmaster of the esteemed Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. He is also the soprano saxophonist of the renowned Trouvère Quartet, resident conductor of the Yamaha Symphonic Band, and a visiting professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts.
For this special concert, Sugawa will be joined by the Akari Saxophone Quartet, which features talented New Zealand saxophonists Simon Brew, Tomomi Johnston, and Michael Jamieson, along with the renowned Dutch/Australian saxophonist Niels Bijl, formerly of the world-famous Aurelia Saxophone Quartet.
The concert will showcase some of the most beautiful and technically demanding works in the saxophone repertoire.
