When Aretha Franklin passed away in 2018, local singer Naomi Ferguson wrote an obituary of thanks to her on social media. It began “Of all the singing teachers I have ever had, Aretha was the best”. With the passing of another jazz legend, Nancy Wilson, later that year, Naomi began to reflect on what she had learned from teachers she had never met and how they had shaped her into the singer she is today.
