The Cavell Leitch New Zealand International Jazz & Blues Festival Presents: Miles Okazaki

Miles Okazaki is a New York based guitarist, who is the first artist to record all of Thelonious Monk’s music on a solo instrument. His approach to playing has been described by The New York Times as “utterly contemporary, free from the expectations of what it means to play a guitar in a group setting — not just in jazz, but any kind.”

Okazaki plays a selection from his 2018 album 'WORK', the complete compositions of Thelonious Monk for solo guitar. The recording has been praised by critic Nate Chinen as “an act of immersive scholarship and exhaustive scope... a singular achievement,” and selected by The New York Times as one of the best albums of 2018, a “monumental statement of devotion.”
