Get to know Christchurch’s own Tui award-winning jazz artist Umar Zakaria in a relaxing afternoon recital. Dubbed a 'sonic warrior' (jazzlocal32.com), Umar is known across the country for his virtuosic solos and original compositions, performed with power and intensity by his famous quartet.
This will be a rare opportunity to witness that same musical spirit channeled into a more intimate chamber setting, further highlighting the dynamic interplay and dialogue between musicians that is characteristic of the jazz tradition.
Supported by local pianist Nick Pitts, the duo will be performing a selection of their favourite classic jazz tunes. Expect a mix of Broadway and dance classics along with the works of great composers the likes of Duke Ellington and Miles Davis, all expertly performed to get your toes gently tapping.
